What was it about Chicago that has led many on missions to impact Chicago?

In the second half of the nineteenth century, Dwight Moody came as a young businessman who was soon found to be a success at “soul-winning.” By the start of the twentieth century, Billy Sunday had left the baseball diamond, was converted at the Pacific Garden Mission, and moved from a Northwest Side pastorate to a nationwide impact. As the middle of the twentieth century approached, Billy Graham, began his worldwide set of “crusades” during his years at suburban Wheaton College. He became a pastor of a church in nearby Western Springs and gained a reputation as a budding preacher in Youth for Christ, a movement that made news chiefly in downtown venues.

In 1983, David Wilkerson came to Chicago to preach on the streets of the Southside of Chicago. Wilkerson, working together with the Illinois Youth Network of the Assemblies of God preached at several locations, giving birth to numerous and future outreaches on the Southside.

Starting in 1991, a mission team from Fargo, including the Heartland communities of North Dakota; South Dakota and Minnesota began to bring participants (mostly students) to the Southside of Chicago. This continued for 29 years. Over those years, more than 3,675 participants have been a part of touching the lives of people of the Englewood and surrounding communities. Events have included training sessions in evangelism; prayer meetings; work projects; children’s ministry; feeding the homeless; and evening presentations of the gospel through preaching, sharing of testimonies and music. Literally thousands have been impacted with the gospel. This year, 2020, would have been the 30th year of a team coming to Chicago, but because of the Covid19 outbreak this year’s outreach event had to be cancelled.
